Ayn Rand's Fictional Characters as Philosophical Archetypes: Part Two

Andrew Bernstein

Presented at: Challenging the Future Houston 1995

Date: Feb 10, 1995

What error of which Greek philosopher does Dagny Taggart commit? How does it contrast with the mistaken metaphysical premise of Dominique Francon? What is the philosophical principle that explains the repeated instances oflove at first sight in Ayn Rand's novels? What is the error made by both Henry Cameron and Steven Mallory-and how do these characters differ from Roark?

Part One of this course analyzed the philosophical principles embodied in the main characters of The Fountainhead and the heroes of Atlas Shrugged.

Part Two will examine the philosophical essence of numerous minor characters, compare and contrast the principles dramatized by several major ones, and analyze the nature of the love relationships Ayn Rand portrays.
