Hector Berlioz, one of the most original minds in the history of music, sought to expand what he saw as the essential characteristic of Beethoven's symphonies: the idea of instrumental music as high drama, on par with, or even surpassing, opera and spoken theater. This presentation discusses each of Berlioz's symphonies and offers suggestions for further study and listening.
