Fyodor Dostoevsky was a novelist of ideas. Philosophical convictions inspired his characters’ actions—and his own. As a writer, he portrayed moral principles with passionate intensity. As a man, he took part in Russia’s debates and dangers (including hard labor in Siberia). Ayn Rand praised his “superb mastery of plot structure.” We will see why.
