Eureka!: The Works and Method of Archimedes

Pat Corvini

Presented at: OCON 2003

Date: Jul 05, 2003

Archimedes is one of the great geniuses of history, a brilliant mathematician who not only advanced the methods of mathematics, but also pioneered the proper application of mathematics to the solution of practical problems. He was essentially the world's first engineer. This course focuses on the significance of Archimedes' work in the development of mathematics as a tool of science. Dr. Corvini examines Archimedes's work in the context of Greek philosophy and mathematics, and shows its relation to the later work of Galileo and Newton through the development of such key concepts as "force" and "limit".
