Frederick Douglass, Defender of the U.S. Constitution

Talbot Manvel

Presented at: OCON 2018

Date: Jun 29, 2018

In 1860, Frederick Douglass, a former slave, traveled to Glasgow, Scotland, to participate in a debate over whether the U.S. Constitution was pro-slavery or pro-freedom. This talk provides a brief sketch of Douglass’s life, and focuses on Douglass’s contention that the Constitution is pro-freedom, not pro-slavery, and is one of the great intellectual defenses of the U.S. Constitution.
