Free Speech in the UK

Andrew Bernstein, Razi Ginzberg, Amy Peikoff, Gregory Salmieri, Steve Simpson

Presented at: OCON 2018

Date: Jul 04, 2018

Concern over the current state of public discourse in the US has shed light on the importance of free speech. Protection of First Amendment rights is not a priority for everyone, as some try to find a “balance” between this right and the prevention of speech which could be deemed offensive or hateful.

In the UK, the situation is significantly, frighteningly worse. There is no first amendment. People have been jailed for offensive social media posts, others banned from the country for their views, and across the political spectrum, the idea that regulating speech is a legitimate role of government goes unchallenged.

Join us at OCON Wednesday, July 4th at 11:30 in the Cardiff room for a panel discussion on Free Speech in the UK.
