George Washington: The Man and the Monuments

John Ridpath, Mary Ann Sures

Presented at: SRB 2002 Vienna

Date: Jun 29, 2002

The Founders of America all looked to George Washington as their leader, and many of them, including Jefferson, Adams, Madison, and Hamilton, held him in awe.

In this special event, John Ridpath will present the facts from Washington's life that exemplify and explain his greatness. Mary Ann Sures will illustrate how Washington has been depicted in painting and sculpture (including works by Trumbull, Stuart, and Houdon), and will discuss two Washington sites: Mount Vernon, his gracious home on the Potomac; and the Washington Monument, the stark memorial to a national hero.
