As Covid case numbers and hospitalizations decline in the U.S. and the vaccination rate continues to rise, several states have begun to lift orders closing businesses and mandating masks. But these moves have also been criticized by public health officials who say such moves are foolish. But did the pandemic ever justify statewide restrictions on movement and commerce in the first place? And are there any lessons we can now learn from the experiment with lockdowns that point the way to a better policy alternative in the future?
