Mendelssohn: Classicizing Romanticism

Thomas Shoebotham

Presented at: OCON 2015

Date: Jul 03, 2015

Although definitely passionately Romantic, Felix Mendelssohn's music, with its polish, balance, and lack of rhetorical extremity often heard in the works of his contemporaries, frequently harkens back to earlier composers, such as Bach and Mozart. This talk focuses on both sides of Mendelssohn's art, examining his approach to melody, rhythm and phrase structure.
