Past, Present, and Dystopia

Dawn Bacak

Presented at: ATLOSCon 2016

Date: May 26, 2016

Are you a fan of dystopian literature, film, and television? Then this class is for you! You need not subscribe to the malevolent universe premise to attend. While the focus will be on dystopian (and anti-utopian) works, I will include a brief history of fictional utopias (and their counterparts). What is the difference between dystopia and anti-utopia? What are some of the common themes, tropes, and trends within the genre? Why do people write them? And, more importantly, why do we like them? While we will refer to some specific works, there are no reading or viewing requirements. Hopefully, you will leave the class eager to explore new dystopias.
