Is capitalism moral? The answer is contested and it hinges on a more fundamental issue—the question of selfishness or self-interest. This talk analyzes various historical arguments for and against self-interest, and it presents an argument for the necessary connection between self-interest (rightly understood) and the development of each man’s moral character. The principle of profit, this talk argues, is synonymous with the profit of principle.
