Amid the frivolous life of Paris in 1883, the young painter John Singer Sargent is desperate to create a portrait that will make him famous. He decides on a transplanted American beauty: Mme. Pierre Gautreau - Virginie. She, too, wants a portrait that will make her famous. Although the painter and his subject are immediately antagonistic, they join forces to realize the art work.
