The Philosophic Death of Free Speech

Robert Garmong

Presented at: Lyceum 1995

Date: Aug 12, 1995

Though free speech seems to enjoy widespread support, it is increasingly being eroded and attacked; to see why, one must understand the intellectual history of free speech. This course will trace that history, from the discovery of free speech in the Enlightenment, to its undennining by its alleged defenders in the 19th century, to its virtual intellectual destruction in the 20th century. We will examine correct and incorrect ways of fighting for free speech, and assess the prospects for the future.
