The philosophy of pragmatism has had an extraordinary impact on contemporary American culture. This course explores the ideas of one of pragmatism's originators, William James. Topics include James' view of volition, his theory of concepts, his moral philosophy, and the impact of James' ideas in law, politics, education, and other fields. Brief selections from James' writings will be distributed and discussed in class.
