Why does Ayn Rand identify purpose as one of the three cardinal values? What is the route to realizing this value? Why do many people have trouble settling on a satisfying purpose in their lives? This lecture will probe the meaning, value, and requirements of purpose. It will explore the material and spiritual dimensions of purpose's value, purpose's relationship to reason and self-esteem, purpose's role in overcoming the "duty" conception of ethics, the relationship between purposefulness on small issuesand pursuing a central purpose, and rationalism as an obstacle to embracing a central purpose. The aim is to better understand this pivotal value so as to maximize its dividends in our lives, for purpose is a passkey to joy.
