United Way: Intrusion in the Workplace

Anna Franco

Presented at: TOC 1989

Date: Nov 10, 1989

Many companies use intimidating and manipulative methods to induce their employees to contribute to United Way. This workshop covered the philosophic premises behind the United Way campaign (altruism) and why companies give the campaign such a high priority (they are apologizing to the community for their profits). Individual employees can fight back by 1) refusing to contribute, 2) being intellectually prepared to defend their position and thereby keeping the moral authority on their side, where it belongs, and 3) sharing their ideas with coworkers who may need intellectual and moral support.
