Villainy: An Analysis of the Nature of Evil

Andrew Bernstein

Presented at: Lyceum 1995

Date: Aug 12, 1995

The evil is the irrational and therefore the helpless. It is incapable of dealing with reality. Yet in the twentieth century it has seemingly acquired the power of an irresistible monster, wiping out continents and slaughtering millions. In our day, its presence is so ubiquitous that it seems inescapable, and even many rational men take its existence as given. It is not an exaggeration to say that evil stands near the threshold of destroying Western Civilization.

How did evil acquire such power? Which philosophical theories turned it loose and which does it depend on? What-in the midst of science, technology and rationality-gave world-destroying power to the mindless and irrational? Above all, what does one do about it? This talk will look into the answers to these questions.
